Episode 50: I’m not Lost—I’ve Grown! The Myth of Losing Yourself in Motherhood

“I’ve lost myself—I don’t even know who I am anymore”

“I put everyone else first, and I’ve lost myself in the process.”

“You have to have your own life apart from your kids”

“Being a mom is what you do, not who you are.”

We’ve all heard these and similar phrases over and over on social media and from all kinds of people. Sadly, it’s in our modern culture to value independence and personal freedom over motherhood. We idolize the “maiden” and devalue the “mother”.

I want to propose to you today that God has a better way.

Scriptures:

Matthew 16:25 TPT

For if you choose self-sacrifice and lose your lives for my glory, you will continually discover true life. But if you choose to keep your lives for yourselves, you will forfeit what you try to keep.

John 10:18 TPT

I surrender my own life, and no one has the power to take my life from me. I have the authority to lay it down and the power to take it back again. This is the destiny my Father has set before me.”

John 10:11 (TPT)

I am the Good Shepherd who lays down my life as a sacrifice for the sheep.

1 John 3:16 (TPT)

This is how we have discovered love’s reality: Jesus sacrificed his life for us. Because of this great love, we should be willing to lay down our lives for one another.

Psalms 5:3 (TPT)

At each and every sunrise you will hear my voice as I prepare my sacrifice of prayer to you. Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on the altar and wait for your fire to fall upon my heart.

Hebrews 12:28 (TPT)

Since we are receiving our rights to an unshakable kingdom we should be extremely thankful and offer God the purest worship that delights his heart as we lay down our lives in absolute surrender, filled with awe.

Psalms 118:27 (TPT)

For the Lord our God has brought us his glory-light. I offer him my life in joyous sacrifice. Tied tightly to your altar, I will bring you praise. For you are the God of my life and I lift you high, exalting you to the highest place.
